(July 22, 2025) On July 22, Jon Andes spoke to the meeting of the Rotary Club of Snow Hill to talk about a book that he authored – The Legacy of Billy Lee, An American Hero. Jon is also a long-time member of the Club.
William "Billy" Lee was an enslaved man who served as George Washington’s body servant throughout the Revolutionary War. After the first President’s death in 1799, Lee was freed per specific instructions in Washington’s will. William Lee was a witness to much of the formative history of our nation. Yet he is often overlooked by historians.
